Biopsies of the prostate gland are peformed in several circumstances:

A nodule is felt on physical examination |

The prostate gland is enlarged |

There are symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland |

There are symptoms of prostatitis (infection) not responding to antibiotics |
| |
|
The PSA level, a blood test for prostate-specific antigen, is elevated or rising. |
