Biopsies of the prostate gland are peformed in several circumstances:

		A nodule is felt on physical examination
		The prostate gland is enlarged
		There are symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland
		There are symptoms of prostatitis (infection) not responding to antibiotics
		The PSA level, a blood test for prostate-specific antigen, is elevated or rising.
